The Virtues of Cryptocurrencies

The value that traditional aid and charitable organizations can provide is all too often diminished by the weight of their financial systems, deeply rooted in the very nature of their organization. Trust, high costs of administration, transaction fees… deter people from engaging these organisations. Meet cryptocurrencies: these decentralised digital currencies offer far more opportunities and directly touch the lives of people around the world, frictionlessly and with no need for intermediaries.

Lorien, as South Africa’s foremost blockchain expert, has been invited around the world to speak on digital currencies and their benefits for emerging economies. He has addressed the IMF, World Bank, FBI, Commonwealth Secretariat, South African Reserve Bank and a host of banking professionals, attorney generals and professionals throughout the world. He developed the world’s first blockchain prepayment solution for smart grids, and is currently working on a crowdfunding platform which allows foreign donation of electricity to needy African schools.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
